Is It Me or the Relationship? Understanding Triggers vs Red Flags

This is something I see people grapple with a lot.

You’re in a relationship. Maybe it's romantic, maybe it's not… and something gets activated.

Maybe it’s a sense of unease.
A tightening in your body.
Thoughts start to come in that feel really convincing…

They don’t really care.
I can’t trust this.
Something’s off.

And from there, you might notice an urge to move closer, seek reassurance, hold on tighter.

Or the opposite, pull back, shut down, create distance.

And underneath it all is this question:
Is this my pattern… or is this a real problem?

Because if you’ve done some healing work, you’re often aware that not every response is about what’s happening now.

You might recognise that your nervous system has learned to anticipate disconnection.
To scan for subtle shifts.
To fill in the gaps when something feels uncertain.

And those responses can feel very real in the moment.

AND at the same time, not everything is “just your stuff.”

Sometimes something is off with the connection.
Sometimes you’re picking up on something that matters and needs your attention.

And this is where it can get confusing.

Because the internal experience can feel similar in both cases.

Activation can come from an old pattern…
or from something happening in the relationship now.

And often, it’s not entirely one or the other.

It might be that something in the present moment touches on something else.
And the response becomes bigger, faster, or more intense as a result.

So the question isn’t always about figuring out the “correct” answer straight away.

But beginning to notice:

What am I feeling in my body right now?
What story is my mind telling me?
And what is actually happening, in observable terms, between me and this person?

Sometimes there’s space to stay, get curious, and gently reality-check those narratives.

Other times, there may be something that needs to be named, spoken about, or addressed.

And part of the work can be learning how to hold both possibilities:
that something in you is being activated,
and that something in the relationship might need attention too.

If you’ve ever found yourself caught in that loop of questioning, overanalysing your reactions, second-guessing your instincts, not quite knowing whether to stay, speak, or step back.

You’re not alone in how complex this can feel.

Disclaimer: If you are in a situation where there is ongoing harm, control, or fear, your nervous system activation may be a response to something real and unsafe—not something to question or work through on your own.

In those contexts, support, safety, and protection are the priority.

If anything here sounds familiar and you’d like support, please reach out. I would love to hear from you.
